The Malabar Gliding Frog, renowned for its elegance and beauty, is a striking example of arboreal amphibians. Distinguished by its vibrant green coloration and the translucent webbing on its limbs, this species exhibits a remarkable adaptation to its canopy-dwelling lifestyle. The Malabar Gliding Frog possesses specialized toe pads that facilitate its graceful leaps between branches.
A notable aspect of its life cycle is its egg-laying behavior. The female deposits her eggs on the underside of large leaves, which overhang pools of water. The eggs are protected by a gelatinous mass, ensuring they remain hydrated until they hatch. This adaptation is crucial for the development of tadpoles, which eventually descend into the water to complete their metamorphosis.
The Malabar Gliding Frog is relatively abundant in the Western Ghats, though its population is sensitive to habitat changes. Preserving the moist, forested environments and the associated water bodies is vital for the continued survival of this exquisite amphibian.
